Hackney Migrant Centre Statement Regarding Far-Right Riots

Posted on 6th August 2024

Hackney Migrant Centre (HMC) is deeply alarmed by the escalating violence perpetrated by the far-right in towns and cities across the UK. The spread of racist, Islamophobic, and anti-migrant ideologies fuelling this violence is truly distressing.

Our primary focus is on supporting those most affected, particularly migrants, visible minorities, and the Muslim community. We stand in unwavering solidarity with our community, and we continue to work tirelessly to advocate for the right of migrants to live with dignity in the UK, free from oppression and discrimination.

We must not lose sight of the root causes of this violence – years of unchecked anti-migrant, racist, and Islamophobic rhetoric. Politicians and the media have scapegoated migrant, Black, and Brown communities for their own failures to address poverty and inequality. This violence is a direct consequence of such harmful narratives.

We reaffirm our commitment to care for and stand in solidarity with those most impacted by these injustices, and ask you to do the same. Together, we must challenge and dismantle these harmful ideologies.
